HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CURLS POST-VACATION

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CURLS POST-VACATION

A tropical vacation might be good for your soul (and your Instagram), but not always for your curls. Saltwater can leave your hair looking great on the surface, but underneath that tousled beauty, your strands may be crying out for help. So what exactly happens to your curls when you dip into the ocean—and more importantly, how do you care for them once you’re back home?

What Saltwater Does to Curly Hair

Saltwater dehydrates the hair. When hair comes into contact with salt water, the salt draws moisture out of the hair shaft, leaving it dry and brittle. That high salt content can cause the hair cuticle to swell and roughen, leading to more frizz.

For our type 3 and 4 textures, salt water can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle, which is the last thing our already moisture-hungry curls need.

After the Getaway: A Recovery Routine for Your Curls

Ideally, you’d prep your curls before taking that ocean dip. But if that step slipped your mind, don’t worry. It’s not too late to show your strands some love. Here’s how to bounce back and bring your curls back to life:

1. Rinse the Salt Away—ASAP

Saltwater can cling to your strands and draw out moisture. As soon as you can, give your curls a gentle rinse with fresh water. Even better if you can use a sulfate-free, hydrating cleanser to remove buildup without stripping your natural oils.

2. Rehydrate Deeply

To counteract the drying effects of chlorine and saltwater, use a deep conditioning treatment once a week during your vacation. We recommend our Orange Bliss Hydration Masque. It’s perfect for curls in need of a moisture reset.

3. Detangle Gently

Salt and wind can leave curls knotted. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle your hair while it's still soaked in conditioner. Take your time—your strands have been through a lot.

Final Thoughts

Beach trips are good for the soul—and with the right aftercare, they can be good for your curls, too. Next time you head out for some ocean air, just remember: play hard, then pamper harder. Your curls will thank you.
